There are three different types of solar power you can get – on grid, off grid, and then hybrid. But what do these mean? When it comes to installing solar, it’s best to know as much as you can so that you can make an informed decision that best suits your needs. It’s always good to remember that what works for one person won’t necessarily work for another as everyone has different circumstances and needs.
On grid solar systems
Grid-tied solar systems, also known as on grid systems, are widely used in both businesses and residences across Australia. These systems are interconnected with your local utility’s grid, enabling any surplus solar energy generated to be exported back to the grid. In return, you receive compensation through a ‘feed-in-tariff’ or accumulate credits for future use, depending on your chosen plan and provider. You can find out more about feed-in-tariffs here.
One of the primary attractions of on-grid systems is their versatility. They allow users to draw electricity from the utility grid whenever their solar system fails to meet their energy needs adequately. This ensures a reliable power supply regardless of fluctuations in solar energy production and eliminates the necessity for investing in a battery backup system. However, it’s essential to note that while on-grid systems cannot generate solar energy during nighttime hours, they remain dependent on sunlight and cannot directly reduce electricity bills during these periods.
Off grid solar systems
An off grid system is not connected to the local electricity grid and will therefore need its own source of battery storage solution. The leftover power that has been generated by the system will be stored in your battery to use on non-sunny days. These are more popular in remote areas where homes are often too far away from the local electricity grid. They’re also more expensive because of the battery element but it doesn’t take too long to pay off considering how much you’re saving going solar anyway.
Hybrid systems
For some, a hybrid system might be best. As a combination system, hybrid solar power stores excess energy in a hybrid battery, so that homeowners have a stash to use in the event of a blackout.
Which one should I get?
On grid solar systems are the most common, however, if you’re living in an area where you are too far from the electricity grid or where power supply isn’t reliable, then going with the off grid solar system might be better for you. If you’re not remote, then choosing an on grid solar system will work out to be more cost effective and reliable in the long run.
