Off-Peak VS Peak

Off-Peak-VS-Peak

People turn to solar panels to reduce their energy consumption and lower their electricity bills. With so many things to pay for these days, the more ways we can find to save, the better. This is why it’s so important to understand what off-peak and peak electricity times mean so that you can further reduce your overall power costs.

What are peak and off-peak times?

Peak times are when the demand for electricity is at the highest and off-peak times are when the demand is at the lowest. Please note, that these times may differ from state to state.

Peak times are usually 2pm – 8pm in summer, and 5pm – 9pm in winter

Off-peak times are usually 10am – 7pm

Shoulder times are 7am – 2pm and 8pm – 10pm in summer, and 7am – 5pm and 9pm – 10pm in winter.

Why do you need to know peak and off-peak times?

When you use your electricity during off-peak times you are getting your energy at a reduced cost which can have a significant impact on your electricity bill. So, for example, by choosing to put your dishwasher on before going to bed, during off-peak times, you could lower your electricity bills. While it can be tempting to do everything the moment you get home from work, such as cook your dinner or put your air conditioner on, all while having the TV on in the background, you’re only going to add to your costs. When changing your consumption habits to take advantage of off-peak times, you will see an improvement in your bill depending on which tariff you are on.

Which electricity tariff should you choose?

There is not a one-size-fits-all approach, and what you choose should be based solely on your individual usage of your electricity.

Time of use: This is good for people who can easily manage their usage habits, and who are generally out of the house during the weekday evenings and home during the day. They’ll need to install a smart meter to help them manage this.

Single rate: For this, there are no on and off-peak electricity times. Instead, you’ll pay one flat rate at all times. This is great for those who are home during weekend evenings and for those who need to use their appliances during peak times.

Controlled lead: Does your home have one appliance that seems to take up the most energy? With the controlled lead tariff, you can choose to have an appliance charged separately at its own standalone rate with its own electricity meter.

Demand: This is based on the consumption intensity of your home at any point in time. Once calculated, this tariff means that the less you use in these periods, the cheaper your bill will be.

To determine when your electricity rates are peak and off-peak, you’ll need a smart meter to do the job for you. And if you’re not sure which tariff you’re on, speak to your energy retailer. The more you know about your own electricity consumption, especially when you use it the most, the easier it will be to make some changes and lower your electricity bill.

Here’s everything you need to know about smart meters.

We received quotes from 3 different solar companies, and Tropical Solar was an easy choice. Not only were they very competitively priced, but Hunter was super informative and not pushy at all. Highly recommend 👌
